Pride & Prejudice is Jane Austen's second and possibly most famous novel. It was originally titled "First Impressions" but was never published under that name, and during revisions was changed to "Pride & Prejudice" which was a common cliche at the time.

The story follows the lives of the Bennet family over about a year and a half. The major themes that run through the novel are the juxtaposition of environment and entitlement, as well as a cynical look at the common social formalities.

Although the novel is focused on the lives of the gentry, it is clear that the upbringing of all the young people involved had strong influences on their dispositions, morality and ultimately the choices that they make. In other words, wealth and privilege do not always translate into exemplary people.

Ms. Austen suggests, for example, that it is her father's indifference and cynicism and her mother's boisterousness and tactlessness that in combination, left Lydia deprived of a solid morale foundation. She, like her mother, reacts emotionally and without much heed to other people's feelings, or understanding of the social mores of the time, as does Mr. Bennet. Similarly, Mr. Darcy who was brought up in an environment of privilege and wealth was doted on by parents, teachers and chaplains. As a result he was instilled with a strong morale compass, but his lack of humility and disdain for others is a result of overindulgence. Basically speaking, children are spoiled both by parents' inattention as well as over attention.

Additionally, through the eager bumbling of Mr. Collins, the heir to the Bennet estate through an entitlement, Ms. Austen pokes fun at the social formalities of the time. Ms. Collins, having no clear understanding of the formalities, focuses his attention on flattery, at the expense of other social rituals, such as formal introductions, dance and table discourse.[justify]
